There are two ceremonies that the School of Social Work graduates can attend:
Attendance at either ceremony is optional. No tickets are required for friends, family or participants. Graduates may invite as many guests as they wish to both ceremonies; seating is first-come, first served.
Social Work and Labor Studies Recognition Ceremony
The School of Social Work Recognition Ceremony will be held Friday, May 15, 2020 at 12:00 pm (noon) in Hall D of the Indiana Convention Center (ICC).
All students graduating in 2020 are welcome to walk at this ceremony, regardless of whether your actual graduation date is in May, June, August, or December 2020.
On the day of the ceremony
Before 11:00 a.m.: The procession will form in the Social Work staging room (The staging room is yet to be determined. We will contact all graduates with staging room information via your IU email addresses). Students should arrive no later than 11:00 a.m. to begin lining up. Students will assemble in Labor Studies, BSW, and MSW groups. It is not necessary to line up in alphabetical order.
Reader Cards: Students will receive a Reader Card to fill out. Please print your name AND spell it phonetically if it’s hard to pronounce. These cards will be used to call your name as you cross the stage to be photographed with the Dean, and to ensure that you receive your picture.
12:00 (noon): The procession to Hall D will begin.
The IUPUI Commencement Ceremony will be held on Saturday May 16, 2020, at 10:00 am in Lucas Oil Stadium. Students are to report to the stadium at 8:00 am (robed). The procession will begin promptly at 9:00 am.
Visit the Herff Jones website for ordering Commencement apparel.
Online orders close Friday, April 27, 2020.
Held in the IUPUI Campus Center near the Barnes and Noble Bookstore on March 3rd and 4th from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Students can rent their graduation apparel from Herff Jones, have formal portraits taken with GradImages, etc. Visit IUPUI’s Commencement countdown webpage for complete details.
Although there is sufficient public parking in the area, parking may be problematic. Early arrivals will be most successful in securing parking close to the ICC. Students and guests with disabilities can use the special entrance on Capitol Avenue; this entrance is clearly marked.
Special arrangements can be made by calling the Commencement Hot Line at 317-278-1700.
Interpreters for the hearing impaired will be present at both ceremonies.
BSW and MSW Students in the top 35% of their graduating class are invited to join Kappa Gamma Phi Alpha Honor Society. Those meeting the requirement will be recognized during the IUSSW School Recognition Ceremony on May 15th and will be notified via email.
2020 graduates at the BSW and MSW level who are recipients of the honor will be listed in the School of Social Work’s School Recognition program and will be presented a Medallion at the Social Work Recognition Ceremony.
Note: If you were inducted into Phi Alpha in 2019, you are welcome to wear your Phi Alpha Medallions at both the 2020 Social Work School Recognition and IUPUI Commencement Ceremonies.
BSW and Labor Studies Students graduating in the upper 10% of their class will be recognized with Honor Cords (Highest Distinction, High Distinction, and With Distinction). Graduates receiving Honors will be notified by mail. BSW Honor cords may be picked up in the BSW Student Services Office of Katrina Patterson (ES 4134B) the week preceding Commencement. Labor Studies honor chords may be picked up in room AD2020U, see Dr. Pat Hill.
MSW Academic honors are recognized through the Phi Alpha Honor Society.
Graduates receiving School of Social Work Honors will also be recognized as a group at the IUSSW School Recognition Ceremony.
Diploma covers, without the diplomas, will be distributed at IUPUI’s Main Commencement Ceremony ONLY (May 16th).
When retrieving your diploma in person, you must present a valid photo ID
Students who have opted to have their diplomas mailed will receive them beginning the week after May 25h.
The Bursars will hold a diploma if there is a balance due on an account.
Note: Out of respect for all of our graduates on this special day, we kindly ask that you make sure your cell phones are silenced, or turned off for the entirety of the School Recognition and Commencement ceremonies.
